👋 friends!

This week my eldest had his 11th birthday. He shares it with his Papa who is visiting, and so we had a party for them both down at our neighborhood lake.

I knew the weather was going to be risky, but once we got there and all set up (no small feat), it was looking promising- beautiful clear skies all the way to the mountains.

Except that suddenly, the wind started to blow East to West (never happens!) and the storms that had passed came roaring back with a vengence. Before we knew it we were standing in 2 inches of water with hail raining down all around us.

I felt so bummed and sad for my kiddo who was, initially, fighting back tears. But then we looked around at all his friends and they were truly having the time of their lives.

All this to say, sometimes what seems like a disaster can turn into joy if we let go of how it was “supposed to be.”

In today’s note:

  • Parenting in the AI era: teacher deepfakes, META’s legal settlement, and more “urgent” letters

  • Connection spark: finding and celebrating good people

  • Hands-on with AI: personalized pump-up rock anthems

  • The whoa zone: a powerful space telescope and robot racing

🤿 Let’s dive in…

Parenting in the AI Era

Teachers are getting targeted

I’ve shared that explicit deepfakes are proliferating in schools. Very sadly and frustratingly, this is also affecting teachers.

Wired, this week, shared accounts from four teachers who were victims of sexually explicit deepfakes created and shared by their students.

It’s heartbreaking, because in each of these cases, the mental/emotional toll was significant and lasting. These teachers no longer feel safe, which will likely have an impact on their ability to teach as well and as openly as they would want.

Schools are doing their best to handle these cases and ensure a safe environment for their teachers and students, but this is new territory and the protocols aren’t fully buttoned up - in one of the article’s examples, the saga lasted for months.

And so, let’s also take accountability and make sure our kids understand that these deepfakes of teachers or peers are not ok - and are illegal. If encountered, they should inform a trusted adult immediately and not engage or share.

The teens beat Goliath

Finally, some good news about social media safety: as the result of a legal settlement this week, Meta is forced to make significant changes to how its products work for people under 18 including things like:

  • a 2 hour daily limit across all its platforms

  • no access between midnight and 6am

  • the ability to turn off algorithmic feed and auto-play

  • parental notifications about unsafe behavior

  • hidden like and reaction counts

  • blocked filters for things like extreme makeup

  • private accounts by default

  • also a commitment to have improved age verification which is a crucial piece to all this

I am hoping that the AI labs are paying attention and will build in safeguards for young people ASAP (ChatGPT for Teens is a step in the right direction) - or be urgently mandated to do so - because using AI in the wrong ways as kids and teens while brains are still developing could have lasting consequences.

Let’s please not wait until a generation has to pay the price.

Reaching a fever pitch

Bill Gates joined the letter-writing party this week, sounding the alarm on jobs going away and bad actors doing very bad things, and offering a handful of vague fixes: a new "system" for managing the transition, saving some jobs for humans, taxing robot labor. Plus a commitment to use his "voice and time to get AI and equity higher on the public agenda."

Argh. The man has the Gates Foundation, billions and billions of dollars, and real influence with both the AI bros and governments around the world, including China. Instead of your voice and time, sir, how about using your money and your influence to go build the frickin' international policy and structure you say we so urgently need?

Then, one day later, another letter. This one authored by OpenAI, and signed by Anthropic, Google, Microsoft, Amazon, IBM, Oracle and 100+ others, warning that "in the coming months, AI-enabled cyber attacks will become far more widespread and sophisticated." Sam Altman, on X: "there is not much time to act." And: "only an urgent and intense collective response will work."

Okay, credit where it's due. While still yet another letter, this is the closest thing I’ve seen to finally getting competitors in a room together and rolling up their sleeves on AI safety. Let’s hope it actually works.

CONNECTION SPARK

Finding Dolly

The world lost someone extraordinarily remarkable this week.

I hadn’t thought much about Dolly Parton lately, but when I saw the news of her passing, I was struck by how deeply emotional I felt.

And I started to read all the beautiful tributes that that were pouring in from seemingly everywhere and everyone.

What I loved most about reading them all was that, collectively, they demonstrate that it IS possible for us to universally get behind someone who is not just smart and talented, but who is also endlessly kind, generous, humble, and authentic.

And so just putting this out there… let’s make it our mission to find, celebrate, and lift up the people in this world like Dolly.

HANDS-ON WITH AI

An oldie but goodie

I shared this AI tip in one of my very first newsletters, but I’m bringing it back again because it’s so simple, fun and meaningful: create personalized songs/anthems for your kids.

I just refreshed my boys’ anthems for the new school year and they are such a big hit that I was inspired to share this AI tip again.

To try:

  • go to Suno.com - if you haven’t yet used it, you ought to get either a free trial or some credits.

  • simply prompt it to make a celebratory rock anthem about your child, [NAME] and include some of the things you love about them or that make them unique (big imagination, a good friend, loves to race, whip smart etc.)

  • If there is a specific style of music or artist you want the song to sound like, a little trick is to go to claude or chatgpt and ask it to write you a suno prompt for a [Benson Boone-style rock anthem] etc.

  • Once you have a version you like, you can download it and save it to your Apple Music library and play it in the car together on the way to school.

THE WHOA ZONE

100,000 new worlds

This Sunday, NASA will launch the Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope aboard a SpaceX rocket. Once it reaches orbit (one million miles away!), it will survey millions of galaxies beyond our own and help scientists study dark matter and dark energy.

It is expected to find over 100,000 planets - more than every planet-hunting mission in history combined.

The launch will be live streamed and could be a neat family activity (if you have early risers).

A photo I took last night of the lunar eclipse

Fast robots

At the World Humanoid Robot Games (yes, this is actually a thing) in Beijing on Aug 22, a robot beat Usain Bolt's 100m world record, running it in a time of 9.39 seconds (his record set in 2009 is 9.58 seconds).

That being said, I can’t see this becoming a thing that people care about, personally. 😂

And that’s a wrap!

If you've found this newsletter helpful, forward it along to a handful of fellow parents who you think might also like reading this.… we’re all in this crazy together.

And, as always, if you have any thoughts, feedback, or requests, please reply to this email with your notes - I love hearing from you!

Glow on,

Michaela
